Matso's Broome Brewery
Matso's Broome Brewery offers a unique choice of on-premise brewed products. Try our award winning Smokey Bishop munich dark lager, Hit the Toad premium lager, Monsoonal Blonde crystal wheat beer or our famous Ginger Beer. 

Tasting notes of our locally produced beers and coolers are provided below:

BROOME BREWERY - ON-PREMISE PRODUCTS DODSON’S DRAFT BITTER

By standards a malty mid-strength lager which benefits from the inclusion of crystal and Munich malt, and utilises Australian grown ‘Pride of Ringwood’ and European ‘Northern Brewer’ hops for a subtle – yet defined – bitter finish. This is an honest mid-strength bitter delivering (hopefully) more flavour than often seen with these lower alcohol beers. On-going experiments with a new selection of lager yeasts will continue to see the refining and evolution of this product.

HOBSBAWM’S LAGER:

A full-strength pale lager based loosely on the German and Dutch interpretations of pilsner (Bitberger, Lowenbrau, Grolsch…). This is a well hopped lager which hints at the wonderful spicy floral dryness of ‘Saaz’ and the aromatics of ‘Hallertau’ hops. It is a clean and refreshing beer with light lemon/citric notes and a bitter-sweet finish. As with the mid-strength bitter, the style will continue to evolve.

REV. SPONG’S AMBER ALE:

A pronounced mahogany colour, the amber ale has a distinctively ‘fruity’ mid palate with some nuttiness, a result of the combination of amber and pale malts. This beer is largely an Australian interpretation of the brown ales of England, reflected in the use of the noble English bittering and aroma ‘Fuggles and ‘Goldings’ hops. This is developing into a rounded and smooth beer, with sweet fruit-malt flavour and a pleasant drying finish.

PILGER’S PALE ALE:

Reminiscent of the well known English export bitter Bass Pale Ale, this pale ale has the same rounded fruity palate though with delicate toffee/butterscotch nuances. Again, ‘Fuggles’ and ‘Golding’ hops are utilised for their wonderful aroma and edgy bitterness. This is a full flavoured – though not over-powering – ale, with plenty of character.

THE RIVER ROCKS EXTRA SPECIAL

This beer is currently in the design stage, and it’s structure and ingredients will remain a family secret. The beer is named after a very special shallow water coral reef, located somewhere in the southwest of Western Australia.

MOCHA STOUT:

Our stout is actually more akin to an English ‘Porter’, the addition of both milk and dark chocolate along with ground coffee mellowing and sweetening the impact of the dark and bitter roasted malts. A small amount of ‘Northern Brewer’ hops are used for bittering and ‘Hallertau’ hops for finishing and lifting the overall aroma. The mouth feel is rounded and easy-drinking with (as would be expected) chocolate and coffee notes softening the rich, dark, grainy body.

‘PRIDE OF BLACKWOOD’ (BELGIAN SPICED ALE):

Unashamedly based upon the delightfully flavoured and aromatic Belgian beers. When Belgium was part of the Netherlands, Dutch traders brought spices back from the East Indies, many of which were used by brewers to add depth of flavour and aroma to their beers. Our own version combines lager and wheat malts, moderate hopping using Saaz and Goldings hops and a careful dose of cumin, caraway and coriander seeds ground in with citrus rind. The spices provide delicate lift to the lovely orange blossom notes of the rind. This is a malty, rather than ‘hoppy’ beer, clearly evident in the warming alcohol on the finish. A heady beer for these cool, dry season evenings. This is our first experimental batch of this style of beer!!!

GINGER BEER:

This brew has now become synonymous with Broome Brewery. We use a pre-prepared Ginger essence as the base for this product and then add our own secret formula. This is a lovely thirst quenching 3.5% drink, ideally suited to Broome’s warm climate. Just add ice!

MANGO or PASSIONFRUIT COOLERS:

These unique products reflect the flavour of the semi-tropical Broome environment. We use specially formulated mango or passionfruit essence that contains a percentage of real fruit pulp, blended with a dry white wine base. These are both refreshing, lively drinks ideally suited to a relaxing afternoon balcony drink.
